Costa Concordia accident

An accident of the Costa Concordia-video cruise liner has happened today off the Italian coast, on the Island of Giglio. Initial news reports claim that four thousand passengers and crew were rescued and two persons have died. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The Costa Concordia cruise liner was traveling on a seven day Mediterranean cruise. But after leaving a port on the island of Giglio, it suffered an electrical failure. Suddenly the boat began to list to one side.

Officials still have no cause for the accident. And passengers doubt that the “electrical failure” was the distinct cause. Yet officials tell Italian news that it was “too early to say what had caused the incident.” The boat by early morning was listing at a twenty-degree angle.

The ship has just departed the port of Civitavecchia. It’s destination was Savona. Giglio’s mayor Sergio Ortelli tells Italian news tonight that the city is on “on full emergency alert and we are preparing to receive the life boats with the passengers onboard.”

Officials claim the electrical fault caused the problem. But witnesses tell news that they think the ship hit something. Passenger Luciano Castro told Italian news “It seemed as if the ship struck something and then we heard a loud bang and everything fell to the floor. The captain immediately came on the tannoy and said that there had been an electrical fault but it seemed very strange as the ship almost immediately began to list to one side. The glasses just slid off the table.”
